CAP’EM Compass | A free online tool for decision making on building materials
We are happy to announce the launch of CAP’EM Compass, a free online tool aimed at supporting decision making on building materials! This was designed and coordinated by PRé Consultants and implemented by GreenDeltaTC.
The CAP’EM project
The CAP’EM (Cycle Assessment Procedure for Eco-Materials) project, financed by the North West Europe (NWE) Program INTERREG IVB, aims to increase the manufacture, distribution and use of eco-materials in the NWE building industry while better demonstrating their benefits. The challenge was to effectively convey this information to the target audience including architects, constructors and other stakeholders.
Based on PRé’s remarkable technical experience in sustainability metrics and software development, PRé proposed and coordinated the design of a graphical user interface (GUI) to easily display technical and environmental information on building products via the web. The interface was designed through a series of stakeholder workshops and feedback rounds with the target audience of the GUI. The CAP’EM Compass was implemented by GreenDelta.
The CAP’EM Compass
The result is a free online tool that allows the user to compare the environmental performance of building materials based on the function they fulfil in a building. The impact resulting from the transport of the eco-material from the manufacturer to the building site can be added. Depending on the user’s interests, the results can be shown with different levels of detail.
The CAP’EM Compass provides:
- A free online interface which is easy to use and understand.
- A solid knowledge base for manufacturers of building materials to compare the strengths and weaknesses of eco-materials and conventional materials.
- Architects, constructors, and other stakeholders connected to the building sector to make purchasing and design decisions based on their own preferences, be they technical or environmental
The CAP’EM Compass will be available for us all to use soon.

The time of the industrial revolution is over. Now it is time for the green revolution to go full steam ahead! Everybody needs to be involved in this process, therefore I aim to guide individuals and businesses in understanding the trade-offs between impacts. This will help them make informed decisions, which will truly help sustainable living thrive."
