Sustainability is crucial for the future of our planet and society as a whole. Players across society are becoming more invested: consumers seek sustainable products, investors prioritize sustainability-focused companies, and governments are stepping in to accelerate sustainable transformation.

In the 30 years of our existence, we have learned that there’s always plenty of work to do. To keep relevant, you have to keep innovating and exploring new territory. We have also learned to put our customers first and to involve them in the development of our software. In the end, they’re the ones using it successfully. That’s why we wanted to give them the floor to share ideas on what SimaPro will look like ten years from now.

Measuring sustainable impact has become increasingly important, which means the same is true for quantitative metrics. Without metrics to measure progress and impact, it is hard to manage sustainability. In many cases, sustainability targets are set top-down. That seems logical, as that is also how it’s done for financial targets, for instance. But that can’t be done without harnessing the power of the LCA community.

At PRé, we’ve been very involved in the European Commission’s Product Environmental Footprinting (PEF) and the Organizational Environmental Footprinting (OEF) initiative, as covered in our series of articles. A big part of the PEF initiative is its pilot phase, planned to last for 3 years and initially scheduled to end soon. However, the pilot phase has recently been extended.
